Introducing IPPFoRB Steering Group New Members: Paulina Nuñez Urrita and Sanela Skrijelj
The International Panel of Parliamentarians for Freedom of Religion or Belief (IPPFoRB) is pleased to announce the appointment of a new structure to its esteemed Steering Group. This diverse and influential group plays a vital role in advancing the cause of freedom of religion or belief for everyone, everywhere. Under the leadership of Chairman Abid Raja, the Steering Group continues to champion the right of freedom of religion or belief for everyone, everywhere.
We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Honourable Nqabayomzi Kwankwa to Vice Chair of IPPFoRB Steering Group. Honourable Kwankwa's dedication and exceptional contributions have been recognized, leading to this well-deserved appointment. With his extensive expertise, unwavering commitment to human rights, and passion for fostering inclusive dialogue, he is pivotal in expanding IPPFoRB's influence in the African continent.
IPPFoRB welcomes two new members to the Steering Group: Sanela Shkrijelj, Member of Parliament North Macedonia, and Paulina Andrea Nuñez Urrita, Member of Parliament Chile. Including new members from the Balkans and Latin America will enrich our discussions, broaden our perspectives, and ultimately strengthen our collective efforts in advancing freedom of religion or belief in both regions. This expansion reflects our commitment to fostering greater regional diversity and representation within the IPPFoRB Steering Group.
Hon. Sanela Shkrijelj, known for her passion for human rights, has a proven track record of advocating for marginalized communities. Her invaluable insights and experiences will be instrumental in advancing our work.
As an active member of the Committees on Education, Labor and Social Policy, European Affairs, and Foreign Affairs, she has demonstrated her commitment to addressing critical issues and advocating for positive change. Ms. Shkrijelj's dedication to feminist principles, human rights advocacy, and social inclusion of vulnerable groups on both local and national levels is exemplary.
“We all have the right to express ourselves freely and express our opinions. The freedom of thought and religion or beliefs is fundamental to living in an open, tolerant, and diverse society – where people can think, believe and subscribe to many views and teachings. We have to use our voices, to use every opportunity, to stand up for human rights for every human being.”
Mrs. Nuñez Urrita’s notable work in the Chilean Parliament has earned her recognition as a dedicated advocate for democratic values and human rights. Recognized as a respected voice in parliamentary affairs, she has actively participated in various parliamentary committees and presidencies, including her contributions to the Standing Committee on Environment, Climate Change, and National Assets, where she served as the Chairperson. Additionally, Paulina played a pivotal role in the Special Committee of the Bicameral Group on Transparency, the Standing Committee on Women and Gender Equality, and the Bicameral Committee responsible for reviewing the regulations of the new constituent body.
“I join the IPPFoRB Steering Group with the conviction to contribute from Latin America to the network of parliamentarians and legislators from around the world in actions that allow combating religious persecution and promoting freedom of religion or belief. It seems relevant to me to add a gender approach to these actions. Gender equality is not just a desirable outcome but a fundamental human right. By adopting a gender lens, we can effectively address the root causes of many issues, including poverty, and create lasting improvements in the lives of future generations. Through this lens, we can empower individuals to fully exercise their freedoms and ensure equality for everyone.”
In addition to welcoming the new member, it is a pleasure to inform that YB Kasthuriraani Patto, a Former Member of Parliament of the Parliament of Malaysia, will continue to serve as a valued member of the IPPFoRB Steering Group. With her continued involvement, we are confident that we can make significant strides in promoting and protecting FoRB.
Chairman Abid Raja expressed his excitement about the new appointments by saying:
"I am delighted to welcome Hon. Kwankwa as Vice Chair and Sanela Shkrijelj and Paulina Andrea Nuñez Urrita as members of the IPPFoRB Steering Group. It is a great achievement for us to gather such a prominent group of parliamentarians. As IPPFoRB Steering Group members, we are responsible for mobilizing and engaging MPs from our countries, regions, and globally. Together, we will strive to advance the principles of freedom of religion or belief, promote dialogue, and protect the rights of individuals worldwide."
We extend our sincere gratitude and deepest appreciation to the esteemed members of the steering group, David Anderson, Aykan Erdemir, and Farahnaz Ispahani, as they conclude their tenure with us. Their efforts to promote and protect Freedom of Religion or Belief globally strongly mark IPPFoRBs history. We express our heartfelt thanks for their invaluable insights.
